Your first physiotherapy appointment at Hayer Health

By Parm Bhullar, B.KIN. MPT

When it comes to your health and well-being, having a consultation with a physiotherapist can be a worthy starting point. Whether you’re looking for pain relief, guidance on managing a current injury, or wanting to return to your favourite activity, a physiotherapist can be the first step in achieving your goal. This blog post aims to provide you with a general guide, shedding light on the process and what you can expect from this initial visit at Hayer Health.

Key Elements of Your Appointment:

Interview and Screening Questions:
1. The physiotherapy session typically begins with a thorough conversation of your primary concerns, previous medical history and specific goals. Expect questions about your pain/symptoms, daily activities, previous injuries, and lifestyle to help the physiotherapist understand your unique situation.

Assessment:
2. A hands-on examination follows, where the physiotherapist will assess your movement, joint range of motion and strength. This step is important in identifying any physical limitations or areas of concern that require focused attention, which will be addressed during the treatment section of your visit.

Treatment Plan:
3. Your physiotherapist will discuss an individualized treatment plan to best address your needs. Treatment at Hayer Health may include a combination of manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, dry needling, electrotherapeutic modalities and education about self-management techniques.

Goal Setting:
4. Based on the assessment findings, the physiotherapist will work collaboratively with you to establish realistic and achievable goals for your treatment. These goals will serve as a roadmap for your physiotherapy journey.

To make the most of your initial visit, consider the following tips:

Plan to arrive 5-10 minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork.

• Check in with the front desk upon arrival: The staff at Hayer Health can help you with your consent form if you haven’t completed it electronically. Also, please provide the staff member with any referrals or medical documents that you may have. You do not require a doctor’s referral or note to book an appointment with a physiotherapist at Hayer Health.

Parking: 2 hour free complimentary underground parking is located off Fraser street. Alternatively, there is free street parking around the clinic as indicated. If parking underground, remember your licence plate as you will need to register your vehicle once you arrive in the clinic.
